Dreams without execution are like hallucinations

I am at Redmond today for the Global MVP Summit organized by Microsoft. Although Microsoft is recognized as an incredibly savvy marketing organization, it is not often lauded for being an incredibly good executioner of ideas. Where as there are tons of people with ideas in this world, what really differentiates the men from the boys is the execution. Take for example the operating system: At its core, its a well understood technology and almost a commodity. However, Microsoft keeps pushing the envelope even on that front. Some of the key areas you will see in Vista aka Longhorn will be

(1) Restart manager - minimizes reboots/update interruptions

(2) Superfetch - prevents machines from slowing down by expanding the virtual memory to include the most number of fetched pages

(3) Translucency, 3d views, et.al.

(4) Layering of processes to prevent backdoor and phishing attacks

But the big takeaway from all this and to apply to your work is that keep chipping away.. keep shaping your ideas into reality everyday!

As Messrs Ballmer and Gates says - It is not important that we take "three versions" to get it right; it is important that we "get it right"!
